Setting up Passbox takes a few minutes. You create an account, choose a master password and save your Emergency Kit. Then you bring in your passwords from your browser or another password manager and set up your devices.
Create an account
- Open app.passbox.net in your browser. If your company or family runs Passbox on its own server, open that address instead.
- Choose Create account and enter your email address.
- Choose a master password. The meter below the field tells you how strong it is and gives tips. Suggest a passphrase fills in a passphrase of five words.
- Passbox creates your Secret Key and shows your Emergency Kit. Save it before you continue (see below).
Did you get an invitation from your family or company? Then open the link in the invitation. Passbox fills in your email address and takes you straight to the family or organization afterwards.
Master password and Secret Key
Your vault is protected by two things:
- Master password: Only you know it. Passbox never stores it and never sends it to the server. That is why nobody can reset it for you.
- Secret Key: A random key that Passbox creates on your device when you create the account. It starts with "P1-". Your devices remember it, so you type it only once per device.
Opening your vault takes both. A guessed or stolen master password alone is not enough.
A good master password is long and used only for Passbox. A passphrase of several random words is easy to remember and hard to guess.
Save your Emergency Kit
The Emergency Kit is one page with everything you need to sign in on a new device: the server address, your email address, your Secret Key and a line for your master password.
- Choose Download Emergency Kit (PDF) or Print.
- Keep the kit in a safe place, for example with your important documents at home.
- To confirm, type the last four characters of your Secret Key. Your vault opens.
If you choose Do this later, Passbox keeps reminding you. You can open the kit at any time under Settings → Account → Show Emergency Kit.
When you create your account, you can also create a recovery code. It then appears in your Emergency Kit as well. With it you can set a new master password if you forget yours. Keep a kit with a recovery code like cash.
First steps in the app
An empty vault shows a Getting started list. It walks you through the essentials:
- Save your Emergency Kit
- Install the browser extension
- Import your passwords
- Set up your phone (iPhone or Android)
- Look at the security check
You can hide the list whenever you like. Until then you find it in the sidebar.
Install the apps and the extension
Passbox runs in the browser, as an app for Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android, as an extension for Chrome and Edge, and on the command line. All downloads are on the download page.
On every new device you sign in once with your email address, Secret Key and master password. If another device is already signed in, you can skip typing the Secret Key and use a device code instead. See Account and sign-in.
Move your passwords in
Passbox reads the export files of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, 1Password, Bitwarden, KeePass, LastPass, Dashlane, Proton Pass, Passbolt and any CSV file. The file is read and encrypted on your device. See Import and export.
Turn on two-factor sign-in
For extra protection, turn on two-factor sign-in. Signing in on a new device then also needs a code from an authenticator app or a security key. See Account and sign-in.
