Cost
What does Passbox cost? Family is free, for one person or a family of up to six people. Business costs €3 per member per month or €30 per member per year, plus VAT. If you run Passbox yourself, you pay nothing and get every feature.
How can Family be free? Passbox earns its money with Business subscriptions. Your data is technically unreadable for us, so we can neither analyze nor sell it.
Do guests, AI agents and service accounts count as members? No. They are free.
What happens if I cancel Business? Once the subscription has ended, the organization becomes read-only. Your items stay readable. Activate Business continues it. Personal vaults are not affected.
Security
Can Passbox read my passwords? No. Everything is encrypted on your device. The server never sees your master password, not even when you sign in. How this works is described in How Passbox protects your data.
What happens if the server is hacked? An attacker finds encrypted data that they cannot open without your master password and Secret Key. Because the Secret Key is never on the server, they cannot guess your master password by trial and error either.
Where is my data stored? The hosted version of Passbox runs in Germany. You can also run Passbox on your own server.
Is the code public? Yes, under the MIT License.
Account
I forgot my master password. Nobody can reset it. Help is only possible through a way you set up beforehand: a recovery code, your family or organization, or a device that is still unlocked. See Account recovery.
I cannot find my Secret Key. It is in your Emergency Kit. On a signed-in device, Settings → Account → Show Emergency Kit shows it after you enter your master password. Or sign in on the new device with a device code.
Family and Business
Can my family's organizer see my private vault? Not in everyday use. Your private vault is yours alone. If recovery through the family is on, the organizer could technically read your data during a recovery. Every recovery is logged and reported to you. More in Account recovery.
Our family has more than six people. Guests do not count. For more members, use a Business organization.
Can I belong to a family and a company at the same time? Yes. Each family and organization has its own shared vaults. Your personal vault belongs to you alone.
Can my company's admins see my passwords? Not those in your personal vault, and not the contents of shared vaults they are not a member of. They see memberships, logs and numbers from the security check. During a recovery of your account, the same applies as for the organizer above.
Moving and apps
How do I move from another password manager? Export your data there and import the file into Passbox. Supported are 1Password, Bitwarden, KeePass, LastPass, Dashlane, Proton Pass, Passbolt and all common browsers, among others. See Import and export.
Can I leave Passbox again? Yes, at any time. The export contains all your data, encrypted or as CSV.
Which browsers does the extension support? Chrome and Microsoft Edge. There is no extension for Firefox and Safari. Use the web app or the desktop app there.
Does Passbox work offline? The apps for iPhone, iPad and Android and the command line keep an encrypted copy and work offline for reading. Changes need a connection.
