With Family you share Wi-Fi, streaming, banking and insurance logins with your family. Everyone keeps their own private vault. Family is free for up to six people, you as the organizer included. Guests do not count. If you run Passbox yourself, there is no limit by default.
What Family offers
- Family vault for everything everyone needs, plus more shared vaults as you like.
- Private vaults for everyone. What is in them nobody else sees, not even the organizer.
- Guests such as babysitters or grandparents see only what you share with them and pay nothing.
- Help in an emergency: The organizer can restore a family member's access, and everyone can choose an emergency contact.
Start a family
- In the web app, open Family & team and choose Start a family.
- Give your family a name, for example "The Millers". The name is encrypted. Only members see it.
- Passbox creates the family vault. You are the organizer.
Recovery through the organizer is on from the start. What that means is described below.
How to invite your family
- In your family, choose Invite.
- Enter the email address and choose the role: family member, co-organizer or guest.
- Passbox shows the invitation link. If your server can send email, the person also gets it by email. Otherwise send it yourself with Copy link, ideally through a channel you trust.
The link is valid for seven days and only for this email address. You see open invitations in the family and can withdraw them.
Join
The invited person opens the link. If they have no account yet, they create one. Their email address is already filled in. Then they accept the invitation and see Waiting for confirmation with their security code.
Before they join, Passbox shows them that the organizer can restore their access. They can also decline the invitation.
Confirm members
People who accepted an invitation wait for your confirmation. In the sidebar, Family & team shows how many are waiting.
- Choose Confirm for the person.
- Passbox checks the person's key and shows their security code next to yours. To be completely sure, compare the codes by phone or in person.
- Confirm. Family members then get the family vault with the permission "Edit".
Roles
| Role | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Organizer | Started the family and manages everything. Appoints co-organizers. |
| Co-organizer | Invites and confirms family members and creates shared vaults. |
| Family member | Uses the family vault and other vaults shared with them. |
| Guest | Sees only the vaults shared with them and cannot change anything. |
Vaults in the family
The family vault is for everything everyone needs. For smaller circles, create more shared vaults, for example "Parents" for insurance. How to share vaults and set permissions is described in Sharing.
New items go to the personal vault by default. With Share… or Move to another vault… you put an item into the family vault.
Guests
Guests are meant for people outside the core of the family, such as the babysitter who needs the Wi-Fi and the streaming service.
- Guests are free and do not count towards the six people.
- They see only vaults you share with them directly, and only to view. They do not get the family vault.
- Of the family they see only themselves and the organizers.
- Guests never take part in recovery through the organizer. Their account stays theirs alone.
Create a separate vault for guests, for example "For guests", and share only that.
Help in an emergency
Forgotten master password: The organizer can restore a family member's access after checking that it really is them. Every recovery is logged and everyone involved gets an email. Good to know: the organizer's device briefly holds the member's key and could technically read their data. How it works in detail and how to turn it off is described in Account recovery.
If something happens to someone: With emergency access, everyone can choose a trusted person who may read selected private vaults after a waiting period.
Manage members
In a person's menu you can:
- Change the role. Only the organizer appoints co-organizers.
- Pause access and lift the pause. The server then stops delivering shared vaults to the person.
- Remove. Access ends at once, and Passbox replaces the keys of the affected vaults. What the person saw before, they may remember. Change important passwords.
If the family is full, Passbox tells you when you invite. For more than six people, create a Business organization.
Leave or close a family
Family members leave the family in its settings. Their private vault stays. The organizer can delete the family after typing its name.
